Check out the Support Us page to learn all the ways you can help us and the food allergy community!
Immediately! We put a lot of effort into making the app cloud-based. What this means is that our database is constantly on-line, so when new products are put into it, they are available for you to find that second. No app updates or waiting necessary. Second only to accuracy in importance, is convenience. As parents of a child with food allergies, we know how much of a hassle it can be to find new foods so we wanted to reduce that hassle in every way we possibly could!
The app allows you to turn on filters for the big 8 food allergens (there are also filters for USDA Certified Organic, nonGMO Project Verified, and Kosher) then use various methods to find food products. You can search by keyword which could be specific like 'Enjoy Life Mountain Mambo Mix' (one of my personal favorites) or broad like 'snacks' or 'desserts'. You can browse the new products that have been added to our database in the last 30 days or you can browse popular searches which is just a compilation of popular keyword searches. In all cases, the products that are found in these searches are all filtered to fit your food needs so you can feel safe with any of the choices on your screen. Selecting a product in the search results lets you look at details for the product and even order it conveniently from your phone via manufacturer and/or Amazon websites when available.
We find our products much like any parent of a child with food allergens does. We started by going through our pantry because those were items that were free of several food allergens that we had found in the grocery store. There are also many companies that are starting to specialize in allergen-free manufacturing that just haven't been discovered by the mainstream. Breads From Anna and Cherrybrook Kitchens are two great examples of companies that are recognizing the importance of allergen-free foods and manufacturing, but may not be known by a lot of people yet.
Season has a background in quality assurance and is extremely detail-oriented. She is the one who specializes in locating foods that are allergen-friendly and does extra digging by contacting manufacturers if there are questions on the allergen information. She is the mother of a boy with food allergies and you can rest assured that she understands the importance of getting information right.
Another method that we're hoping to grow with is by YOU. Within the app, there is the capability to submit products to us to review. There are thousands upon thousands of allergen-friendly products out there and our community is a helpful one. If you know of a product that we don't currently have in our database, please let us know about it by submitting it. We will research the product to get the most accurate allergen information we can and then add it to the database. You will be helping other individuals and you never know - that product could be one that helps avoid an allergic reaction!
Eat It You Can
As of right now, the app is available on the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad.
We have plans to also make the app available on Android-based platforms, but are focusing on one language to try and develop the app capabilities and hone it into a great product first. If you are someone familiar with developing Android-based applications, please let us know via the Contact Us page. If you are willing to help and we have the resources available, we would be interested in knowing about that opportunity!
Eventually, we would like to also implement a web-based application so that you can use the bigger computer monitors for your reading convenience.
